What is the Security Dashboard?

There are many resources to find data about security threats on the Internet today. We at Info-security.net have taken one of our favorites and will keep it updated on this page so you have one location to research security information. As we find other useful information, it will be posted here.

What does this mean?

“Latest threats” simply refers to the most recent threats to your PC that Symantec has detected on the Internet. Once identified, anti-virus vendors around the world build counter measures to block these threats. These are then distributed to their customers via regular (usually daily) virus definition updates. This is why it is critical to make sure you keep your anti-virus program up-to-date.

“Security advisories” communicate the potential problems (known as vulnerabilities) that have been found with applications. Typically these refer to a bug or problem that could be later exploited. For example, Microsoft releases new advisories once a month. These monthly advisories warn of potential problems and recommend actions all users should take to fix the problem. These “fixes” are typically in the form of patches.

Patches?

Patches are simply small pieces of code designed to fix problems that have been found after a specific application was distributed and installed. In Microsoft’s case, they release a monthly set of patches to fix problems that have been found within the past month. It is essential that users apply these patches if they are using the software in question.

To find Microsoft patches, please visit Microsoft’s Windows Update Site or from within Internet Explorer, select Tools and then Windows Update.

For patches on Mac OS X, select the apple logo in the top left of your screen and select Software Update. By default, your machine should check for patches once a week.

All software vendors should have a method of distributing patches, please check their website for their patch release schedules and policy.
